The US Copyright office actually got back to me very quickly on a question. Within a couple hours and they were very nice. Just don’t ask them the copyright status of any particular work unless you’re ready to pay a research charge. Also don’t ask them for opinions or advice. That’s the job of copyright lawyers. But you can lay out a question for them, even give a scenario as an example, and ask them how the law applies to the situation and whether or not a certain course of action is within your legal rights.

The early 90s were a fun time for software and games, and they often employed creative ways to prevent piracy. Apogee’s Commander Keen 6 came with a manual containing creature names, and after you run the program, you are prompted to look up the creature name. DRM from 1991 
Who still has their manual? I presume you can obtain one at one of the abandonware sites…
